Weekly News Update

Greetings,

In this week's newsletter:-

Family BBQ and VCYC Series 1 Sailing Races

After three days of sunshine, perfectly timed to greet the official first week of spring, it looks like the tropical paradise weather we all love so much is eventually returning to Vanuatu.

For sailors the pleasant change in the weather has also resulted in a very noticeable change to the median wind speed with the trade winds a lot less powerful than during the past few weeks.

The weather forecast for this weekend is extremely light 5 - 8 knot winds all day Saturday and a nice moderate 12 - 15 knots on Sunday.

So, besides going with the majority of sailors who polled their preference, the final two races of the inaugural VCYC dinghy race series, family BBQ and prize giving will need to be on Sunday.

Family & Friends Sunday BBQ & VCYC Series 1 Prize Giving

The racing on Sunday will be followed by a family and friends BBQ and the VCYC Series 1 prize giving.

The club will provide the BBQ fires but you are asked to please bring your own meat to BBQ and whatever else your family and friends will enjoy eating for lunch.

The club bar will be open from 11am with cold beer, wine, spirits and cocktails available.

Our bar prices are the cheapest in Port Vila and we do need your support to keep this facility open so please respect this by not bringing your own alcohol. If you do have a favorite bottle of wine the bar does not stock that you'd like to bring with for lunch a courtesy corkage fee of not less than VT800 per bottle will be appreciated.

The Sunday BBQ and bar is open to everyone so please do invite your family and friends to join in the fun and to watch the races this Sunday.

The sailing program for this weekend is hence:-

  • Saturday 9am till 11.30am - Ni Vanuatu Learn to Sail Development Group
  • Sunday 9am till 11am - VCYC Sailing School Sailor Evaluation and Graduation
  • Sunday 11.30am - 1.30pm - VCYC Series 1. Races 5 & 6
  • Sunday 1.30pm onward - Family BBQ and VCYC Series 1. Prize giving

As only the best 4 out of 6 races will count toward the sailors final score sailors who have only sailed two of the four races so far are still able to enter and win the series, so the competition this Sunday is going to be both fun and exciting.

Please make a note to remember the early start time for races this Sunday and that we all please need to be rigged and ready to sail before the 11.30am start.

Sailboats Wanted and For Sale

As we witnessed last weekend we now have more sailors than there are boats.

It is absolutely fantastic that the work put into revitalising the VCYC is showing this very positive result but we do need boats for bums to keep this momentum and growth going forward.

RS Sailing Vanuatu continue to make their demo and sailing school sailboats available to our young development sailors to train and race on, and hire out any remaining boats but without more boat owners the sport and fun we have sailing will just not grow any further.

The purpose of this appeal is hence twofold:-

If you know of anyone who has an old sailboat in the garage, garden or wherever please let Paul (phone 22909 / 7767360) know about it no matter what state of repair it is in.

The VCYC will be happy to collect any such boats, or even parts of boats, that can be salvaged and be used to put a boat back on the water and sail.

Alternatively, if you do not yet have your own please seriously consider buying a boat.

Besides having brand new RS Tera, RS Quba, RS CAT16 and Laser sailboats in stock and ready for delivery RS Sailing Vanuatu are offering to sell and then replace their fleet of sailing school and demo boats at a huge discount.

RS Sailing also guarantee to buy back every sailboat they sell thereby removing all risk of you investing in a boat that you may later not be able to sail or if you ever need to move away from Vanuaut and live somewhere else.

And, if like most of us, you do not have spare cash to buy a boat outright RS Sailing offer easy monthly repayment plans, some interest free, so please do not be shy and ask to ask to pay off your boat.

For more info on new sailboats please visit www.sailing.vu/sailboats.html and for a list of the demo and ex sailing school boats available for sale at give away prices click here.

Bart's Bash International Regatta

Bart's Bash International Regatta 2015 will be sailed / raced at a total of 340 venues in 47 countries, including Vanuatu on Sunday 20 September.

The VCYC Bart's Bash will include and be for both our cruising yachts and dinghy sailors.

All our sailors / members are reminded to please click here to enter online (it is free!) and for more information on this world record event.

I look forward to you joining us, on or off the water, at the new VCYC club premises and bar at the Port Vila Boatyard for both the sailing and family BBQ this weekend.

Wishing your fair winds and good sailing.
