Weekly Members News - 05 August 2015

Welcome to the new format VCYC weekly news update.

New VCYC Premises

For those who do not yet know the VCYC has a new permanent home at The Boatyard adjacent to the cruise ship terminal in Port Vila harbour.

Our new home has everything we need from space to store the VCYC property, a licensed bar, brand new toilets, shower and, most important of all, direct access to the water.

Whether or not you still sail, please pop round to the VCYC's new home from 2pm this Sunday afternoon for a cold beer and to celebrate the new sailing season with us. It will be really nice to see you again and our sailors will certainly appreciate your support.

If you'd like to bring some meat to BBQ (BYO / DIY BBQ) this Sunday there will be BBQ fires and facilities available for you to use.

Independence Day Flotilla

Last Thursday saw the resurrection of the annual Independence Day flotilla through town and back.

The weather was not in our favour but we still managed to muster a reasonable fleet of craft and had tremendous fun.

Thank you very much to everyone who participated and especially to the rowers from Vanuatu Rowing Club, Wade from Vila Flyboard Adventures and Big Sista. Your participation in the flotilla was really appreciated.

Opening of 2015/16 Sailing Season

Although a few adrenalin junkies took to the water the planned inaugural dinghy sailing club races on Independence Day were blown out and did not happen.

These races, that also mark the opening of our 2015/16 sailing season, will now take place from 2pm this Sunday afternoon.

Any type of sailing craft is most welcome to join in the races, entry is free and is open to everybody - you just please need to be rigged and ready to launch for the 2pm start.

And, if you know how to sail but do not have a sailing dinghy you are able to hire and race one of the RS sailboats (see below).

VCYC Sailing School

The next VCYC Level 1 youth sailing courses (based on the RYA curriculum) are scheduled to start this Saturday and Sunday morning.

The Saturday morning school is conducted in Bislama and the Sunday morning sailing school in English / French.

A few places are still available for the Sunday morning sailing school. If your children, or any other children you know, would like to learn how to sail please telephone Paul on 22909 or 7767360 for more information.

Cost per sailor for the VCYC Sunday morning sailing school is just VT1,000 for the first lesson (includes VCYC annual youth membership fee) and VT500 for each of the following three lessons.

Alternatively, if you or your children prefer more personalised sail training, private sailing lessons for both adults and children may be booked directly with Sydney, our RYA and OSAF certified coach, on 7767364.

More online info on the sailing courses offered by Sydney is here.

Sailboats for Hire

Sailors who do not yet own a boat are able to hire the RS Tera, Quba and CAT16 demo / sailing school boats for both club races and leisure sailing at extremely reasonable hourly rates.

Advance booking is advised, you do already need to know how to sail the type of boat you want to hire and, as is the case with hire cars, you are responsible for any damage / breakages to the boat whilst in your care.

More info and hire prices are here.

Sailboats for Sale

For the sport of sailing in Vanuatu to grow we need to have boat owners but, as we all know, the cost of purchasing a sailboat is not cheap. Further aggravating this is that many of us are in Port Vila for just one or two years.

RS Sailing, the South Pacific distributor and importer for both Laser and RS sailboats, realise this and in an effort to encourage more new boat owners they are:-

  • Offering brand new official class legal Lasers (made and imported from Australia) complete with the XD race upgrade and choice of sail for $1,450 less than you can buy exactly the same boat for in Australia!   More info on this limited time offer is here.

  • Offering to replace and sell their existing fleet of nearly new RS Tera, RS Quba and RS CAT16 demo and sailing school boats at a huge discount.   More info on this offer is here.

In addition to offering the the lowest RS and Laser sailboat prices anywhere in the world (a first for Vanuatu!) every sailboat is sold with a buy-back-guarantee and this makes them a very attractive offer if you are only in Vanuatu for couple of years as well as for families not yet certain if sailing is the sport for them.

RS Sailing carry local stock of all spares and also offer easy monthly payment plans on all their sailboats.

I look forward to you joining us, on or off the water, at the new VCYC club premises this weekend.

Wishing your fair winds and good sailing.
