Weekly News Update

In this week's newsletter:-

New VCYC Committee

Following a well supported 2016 AGM last Saturday I am pleased to advise those not present at the AGM that the new VCYC committee for the following year are:-

  • Commodore - Gary Vasconcellos
  • Vice Commodore - Justin Jenkin
  • Rear Commodore - Marc-Antoine Morel
  • Treasurer - Merav Metzad
  • Secretary - Jennifer Nichol
  • Development - Paul Pettitt
  • Committee - Jim Coates
  • Committee - Nicola Young
  • Committee - Stephen Barlow
  • Committee - Rob Macalister
  • Committee - Jan Bochenski
  • Ad-Hoc Member - Polito Koltoua

Reflecting the success enjoyed by the VCYC the previous year is that, in addition to four new committee members, the entire outgoing committee were re-elected unopposed.

With the increased committee now able to share the growing workload VCYC members can look forward to a more sailing active and social year ahead.

The first meeting of the new committee is at 11h00 Saturday 23 April.

VCYC Weekend Sailing

The VCYC club sailing and activity schedule for this weekend is:-

  • Saturday Morning - IFIRA Scout Troop Learn to Sail Group
  • Saturday Afternoon - VCYC Sailing School
  • Sunday Afternoon - VCYC Social Sailing and Club Races (please be rigged and ready to sail by 2pm)

A reminder to anyone wanting to sail, either socially or in the Sunday races, that the VCYC have RS Tera, RS Quba and Laser sailboats available to rent on a two hourly or half day basis. Rental prices for members are half those charged to visitors / non-members.

If you need to rent one of the VCYC club boats for the Sunday sailing please arrive by 1pm to allow everyone adequate time to rig and be ready for the 2pm race start time.

New Caledonia Inter Provincial Sailing Games

The VCYC have accepted an invitation to send a team of four youth sailors to the New Caledonia Inter Provincial Sailing Games on Lifou Island from 08 till 12 August.

The competition will be raced on Hobie Wave class sailboats and is open to both expatriate and Ni Vanuatu sailors 17 years of age and younger. A prerequisite of the invitation is that at least one team member must be female.

With the exception of the flight to and from Port Vila the New Caledonia Sailing Federation are sponsoring all Team Vanuatu costs to participate including accommodation, meals, boat charter, entry fee and the flight from Noumea to Lifou island. Their generosity that will certainly make participating a lot more affordable for all sailors is appreciated.

In addition to the New Caledonia championship, and depending on our team's performance there, a possibility that two of these sailors will be entered to represent Vanuatu and race the multi-hull class at the 2016 Youth World Championships also exists.

To create a competitive team selection criteria the VCYC are inviting all youth sailors interested in this awesome opportunity and some intensive coaching on multi hull sailboats to contact Justin Jenkin on 771 9174 for more information.

VCYC Coach the Coach Certificated Course

A very successful coach-the-coach course was presented to VCYC sailors by Yachting New Zealand last week.

The VCYC now have a total of eleven certified coaches and assistant sailing coaches who will be sharing their sailing knowledge with new sailors over the coming weeks and months.

A huge thank you goes to Andrew Clouston and Yachting New Zealand for presenting the course and for making this possible.

Have a great weekend sailing and I look forward to you and your friends joining us on or off the water at the VCYC this weekend.
