Weekly News Update

The VCYC open day this past Saturday was a huge success and really enjoyed by all.

A huge thank you to everyone who gave up their time to help, shared their boats and made the day such a success. Special thanks are deserved by Jim Coates who was there from beginning to end and for managing the shoreside activity so well.

In this week's newsletter:-

VCYC Introduction to Sailing Coaching Day

Following the open day we now have quite a large group of new members wanting to learn how to sail.

To properly manage and co-ordinate the sailing lessons schedule over the following weekends the first session for everybody and anybody wanting to learn how to sail will be a group lesson at 2pm on Saturday 27 February.

The focus of this first and important lesson will be on:-

  • Personal and Boat Safety
  • Boat care and maintenance
  • Boat rigging / de-rigging
  • Sailing knots
  • A brief explanation on the science of sailing (what makes the boat move)
  • A fun on the water capsize and recovery exercise

Those wanting to continue the sailing lessons will be then allocated to smaller groups and matched to sailboats for the remaining sessions during the weeks that follow.

There is no need to book a place for this first session - just arrive in time for the 2pm start and look forward to a whole lot of fun mixed in with a bit of knowledge.

If you need more info on the VCYC sailing course(s) please phone Paul on 7767360.

Race 2 & 3 VCYC 2016 Club Race Series

So that everybody is able to enjoy the long weekend please note that the club races this weekend will be sailed on Monday and not Sunday afternoon.

The VCYC bar will be open from noon, skippers briefing will be at 1.30pm and the start of the first race at 2.00pm.

If you do not yet own a sailing dinghy, or would just like to try sailing a different boat, the VCYC now has brand new sailboats available for hire for a very nominal fee. Please phone Paul on 7767360 if you'd like to book use of a club boat to sail in the club races this Monday afternoon.

As always the emphasis at VCYC club races is competitive fun and everybody is welcome to join in, both on and off the water.

Free 2016 Cruising Charter Guide

To not forget our keelboat members Yachts & Yachting have just published their 2016 Cruising Charter Guide.

As with most European sailing publications the South Pacific is unfortunately hardly mentioned but there are quite a few new marinas in the Eastern Med and Caribbean someone may be lucky enough to visit.

To download a free PDF copy of the 2016 Charter Guide click here (it is a quite large 6Mb file and depending on your internet connection may take a while to download).

I look forward to seeing you at the VCYC Club this Monday afternoon, whether to enjoy the club races or just a couple of ice cold beers and friendly company at the club bar.
